Is Facebook’s ’10 Year Challenge” Actually A Data Scam?

But, some people think the challenge might actually be a way for Facebook to collect even more data about its users. Some conspiracy theorists out there say these posts could potentially be used in developing facial recognition technology. Um, what?!
So, the theory is that you get a whole bunch of people to post lot’s of pictures, and tell them they need to be a fixed number of years apart (ahem, 10). By doing this, there’s now a very large data set of ‘then and now’ photos of people from roughly 10 years ago and now. In other words, enough to help train a facial recognition algorithm on age progression.
Most people are upset about this idea, because privacy.
But, what if it actually helped make the world a better place? Consider finding missing persons, or kids, who have been missing awhile. They would obviously look different from their last known photo, so a reliable age progression software would be amazing!
But, again, privacy and stuff. Makes people mad. I guess I like to put a positive spin on things instead of always assuming Facebook is out to get us.
What do you think?
