Cost Of Charging An Electric Vehicle Will Surprise You!

The future is almost here, where the pumps selling gas won’t be on every corner.

Not factoring in the old “time is money” kick, average electricity rates to “fill up” in North America would run about $13, or roughly what would be spent on four gallons of gas.

While I would LOVE to tell you the cost of charging a locally produced Rivian vehicle, the full specs of those models and battery life have not been confirmed yet. So these numbers were based on a 2018 Tesla Model S 100D with a 100kWh battery.
(Although just this week, RIVIAN CEO RJ Scaringe told TESLARATL.com that it would be a 180kWh battery in their pick up and suv, with a range of maybe 400 miles)

From Forbes Magazine:

Fortunately, the good folks over at comparethemarket.com have gone out and done all the legwork, but it’s very interesting to see how the prices compare across major developed and less-developed countries.

First off, the United States. In terms of ranking, the US, with plentiful energy generating capacity from a wide mix of fossil fuels and renewable resources, is seventh cheapest on the list – on average. Taking that Model S from unmoving brick to long-range ready will set you back $13, or about a nickel per mile. That’s using a real-world pre-anxiety range figure of 259 miles rather than the run-it-until-pretty-much-dead figure of 335 miles from Tesla for the 2018 model. [Note: Tesla says the 2019 “Long Range” Model S can now cover 370 miles, but they don’t list battery capacity]. So for the cost of about four gallons of gas, your EV is all topped up in the USA. A considerable savings in most cases.

In America, the cost of power can vary dramatically, from over $.23 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in Rhode Island to less than a dime in Washington state, where cheap hydropower rules. EV-crazy Californians pay almost 20 cents per kWh, while just to the north in Oregon, it’s about half that much, so location matters.

A nickle a mile? Yeah, that could work.
