Netflix Removes Graphic Suicide Scene From ’13 Reasons Why’

Netflix just announced they have cut the graphic suicide scene from the first season of “13 Reasons Why” ahead of the release of the third season.

In the nearly 3 minute scene, which is no longer available on Netflix, the character Hannah can be seen assessing her life in the mirror, and is then shown sitting in a bathtub and taking her own life in a very graphic, very detailed, very intense scene. Not long after, Hannah’s mother discovers her daughter’s lifeless body in the blood-filled tub. The episode opened with a warning to viewers that the installment “may not be suitable for younger audiences” but still stirred controversy over the graphic scene.

In a statement released by Netflix on Tuesday, “We’ve heard from many young people that “13 Reasons Why” encouraged them to start conversations about difficult issues like depression and suicide and get help — often for the first time. As we prepare to launch season three later this summer, we’ve been mindful about the ongoing debate around the show. So on the advice of medical experts, including Dr. Christine Moutier, chief medical officer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, we’ve decided with creator Brian Yorkey and the producers to edit the scene in which Hannah takes her own life from season one.”

The new scene, which has been updated on Netflix, features Hannah looking at herself in the mirror before cutting to her parents’ reaction to her suicide. Viewers will no longer see the graphic scene, and Netflix has even gone as far as saying they will monitor for any other pirated clips that feature the original, unedited scene. The new clip is designed to carry the same emotional impact of Hannah’s death on the show.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for American youth between the ages of 10 and 24, resulting in about 4,600 deaths each year, according to the CDC.
